Rigorous Curriculum Design Units Overview:
Franklin County Schools will be using Rigorous Curriculum Design Units for the 2014-2015 school year. K-12 teams developed the first unit to be utilized. Teachers from every school were invited to be part of the curriculum design teams. Throughout the school year, more units will be developed and posted on the C & I website. These documents are a work in progress and will be updated throughout the year. These Units will only be provided electronically by the district. Individuals have the option to print these documents.
Year at a Glance Pacing Calendars are to support and direct instruction. Pacing calendars do not dictate how a teacher teaches. Year at a Glance Pacing Calendars are designed based on input from many stakeholders. Data and feedback from the previous year are utilized to update these documents.
“I Can” statements which are given to parents at the beginning of the school year are aligned with the State Standards. The standards within the RCD units will be assessed and reflected on the academic report card.
The assessments within the RCD Units are required. The pre-assessment, as well as the initial performance task(s) are formative assessments used to guide instruction for the unit. Formative performance tasks should take place throughout the Unit after relevant instruction and learning experiences have taken place. The post-assessment as well as the final performance task are summative assessments that will be reported on the report card.
The designated engaging learning experiences within the Unit plans are aligned with the priority and supporting standards. If you choose to implement alternative learning experiences with your students, they need to be aligned with the standards and increase in rigor from one task to the next. When creating and/or choosing learning experiences, the unpacking documents provided by DPI should be utilized to ensure students are receiving appropriate instruction that is rigorous and will provide a continuum of support.
Each nine weeks will encompass two ELA unit plans. One will focus on Informational Text integrated with Social Studies State Standards. The second unit will focus on Literature. Science Standards need to be thoroughly taught each nine weeks, in addition to the RCD Unit plans. Instruction beyond what is within the RCD Unit plans will be needed to sufficiently teach all required State Standards, especially Foundational Skills.
